Women empowerment is not a new concept, it is quite a well-known around the globe. Women empowerment is a continuous dynamic process took up to uplift women’s abilities to furnish the structure and ideologies that keep them subservient. Women empowerment is a process of creating awareness and capacity building. It is a methodology that gives a person freedom in decision making.

Women Empowerment deals with achieving supremacy in the economic, education and social powers concerned to the Women. It puts forth an environment where there is zero gender bias and has equal rights in the community, society, and workplaces.

Why Women Empowerment?

Women constitute almost 50% of the world’s population, but in India, the sex ratio is rather disproportionate as women population is comparatively lesser than men. Even regarding the social status is concerned, women are treated unequally in comparison to men. Gender disabilities and discrimination are found in India even today.

Present day women in India enjoy a respected status of equality along with men, according to the constitutional and legal provision. But the Indian women have come a long way to achieving this current position. The National Movement along with other reform movements laid a path for the liberation from the community evils and spiritual taboos.

During the course of empowerment, women must examine their strengths and weakness, opportunities and threats and process forward to uncover their individual potential to attain goals through self-development. Women empowerment ensures women are well-organized within themselves and enhance their self-reliance with greater autonomy.

The economic empowerment of women is considered as a sine-quo-non of progress for the nation; hence, the economic empowerment of women is of ultimate significance to both political and social reformers.

The empowerment of women would result in an overall development of society both at the micro and macro level. Active participation of women in economic activities and decisions would contribute towards overall economic development.

Women throughout the world are on a path to reverse the gender inequalities. Their revolutions are also being supported by many men who cannot tolerate injustice against women and strive for their betterment. The aim of women empowerment is to provide power to them.

  • The 73rd &74th Amendments (1993) to the constitution of India have provided some special powers to women that for reservation of seats (33%).

The year of 2001 was observed as the year of women’s empowerment. During this year, a landmark document named, ‘the National Policy for the empowerment of women’ has been adopted.

In India, women are differentiated at every level, whether economic, education, healthcare, politics, and social participation.

  • Many women have found to be economically backward throughout the country. So, they require economic power to stand on their own legs on par with men.
  • According to the 2011 census, the rate of literacy among men in India is found to be 82.14%, whereas it is only 65.46% among women. Thus, a rise in education needs among women is of ultimate significance in empowerment.
  • Some women don’t have sufficient intake of daily substitutes required for everyday energy needs, hence many women are suffering from nutritional in-deficiencies.
  • Another problem is workplace harassment of women.

Due to all the above reasons, women need empowerment in every region in order to protect and enjoy the social rights among themselves.
