Union Territory – 7 Union Territories of INDIA

Indian Union Terrotories

Union territory is a separate administrative division. India has a list UT’s that have been created for some specific reasons. There are some differences between UT and state. To govern the UT’s the Indian government usually hires an administrator. In India you would find seven UT’s among which Delhi is one and also Chandigarh which is the capital of both Punjab and Haryana.

Indian Union Territories

Union territories are not states they differ from the states. These areas are too small to form a state. When such an area comes to notice, usually the government turns the area into a part of another state. However, when it comes to UT, the uniqueness of the area restricts the government from making it a part of another state. This is the reason, the UT’s are created.

Differences between a State and Union Territory

In India you would find 28 states and 7 union territories. The states have many historical links which make them unique. Also, each state has its own government that rule the area. Union Territories are separate divisions that don’t have their own set of government.  UT’s get ruled by the central government itself.

It is the president of the country who appoints the administrator who takes the responsibility of ruling the UT’s. These were known as the chief commissioner province before India got independent. The government of India act came to effect in the year of 1937. This act divided the provinces into three different segments – states, chief commissioner provinces and governor’s provinces.

The act also stated that only the chief commissioner’s provinces would be ruled from the central government.

States regardless of the location, have unique set of elected government. The states enjoy being basis linguistic. Usually it is the language which plays the key role in determining the state. Culture also plays a significant role. Apart from the governing factor, there are small differences between the states and the union territories.

If you look at them by the size, states are much larger in size than the UT’s. the rights and status of the two are different as well. While states have normal rights and status, UT’s enjoy special rights and status because of the formation of the areas.
