According to one mythology Rishi Markandeya, a devotee of Lord Shiva knew this Mantra. When the Moon was cursed by King Daksha, the Rishi passed on this mantra to Daksha’s daughter Sati to help the moon.

Another version states that Lord Shiva taught this mantra to Rishi Sukracharya who passed it to Rishi Dadhichi.
