The Madhav National Park, located in Shivpuri district of Gwalior reign, is one of the oldest parks in Madhya Pradesh. Being a part of upper Vindhyan hills, this park is very rich in biodiversity and holds the uniqueness of having forest and lake ecosystem. The park is expanded in an area of 354 km2 and offers an awe-inspiring beauty of nature and wildlife.  Enticing Madhav National Park is a perfect blend of natural beauty, magnificent history, and architectural wonders. It consists of a huge variety of wild and forestry life. This park got the national park status in 1958.

Madhav National Park holds a royal legacy of its past right from the time period of Mughal emperor Akbar. It is said that in 1564, Akbar captured the huge herds of elephants from the dense forests of Madhav National Park. Earlier it was mere a hunting destination for Akbar and Maratha Royals but later it became the summer capital and hunting preserve of Scindia rulers of Gwalior.  In Fact, it was named after the Maratha King Madho Rao Scindia, The Maharaj of Gwalior belonging to Scindia dynasty. Since it was a royal reserve, it has been kept protected and well maintained. In 1955, the park was established as Madhya Bharat National Park but in 1959, it was given its present name Madhav National Park.

How to Reach Madhav National Park

Reaching Madhav National Park is hassle-free. As it is located on National Highway-3, it is well connected to the major cities of India, especially by road network. If you’re planning to go by your own car, it won’t be a bad idea. If you’re using public transport, the nearest airport is Gwalior Airport and the nearest railway station is Jhansi which are about 100 km away from Madhav National Park. From here, you can use any road network transport to reach there easily. Unnumbered of road vehicles go to Madhav National Park at frequent intervals. In addition to that, regular buses are also connected to the nearby cities of Madhav National Park.

Significance of Madhav National Park

Majorly known for its deer attractions, Madhav National Park is a home to diverse flora and fauna. It houses an infinite number of sundry wild animals, a huge variety of bird species, sprawling grasslands, and dense forests flourished with copious deciduous trees. The towering mountains provide a protection to the park and are home to many animals. Earlier this park was known for its rich population of tigers but presently there is only one pair of tigers. Sakhya Sagar and Madhav Sagar Lake are the jewels in the crown of Madhav National Park. These perennial lakes serve the water to the flora and fauna of the park throughout the year.  A pleasure steamer ride through the lakes is a great way to admire the alluring and breathtaking charm of the park.  Many aquatic animals like python and crocodile are also found in these lakes. Above the Sakhya Sagar Lake, there is viewing lodge called ‘Shooting Box’ constructed by Maharaj Madho Rao. From this high above peak, you can have the entire view of the park. Before leaving the park, don’t forget to check out the majestic architecture of this park. The resplendent beauty of lofty George Castle and unparalleled Scindia Chhatari will leave you certainly astonished.

Madhav National Park holds a very prominent place in Indian ecology. Its wildlife and natural beauty are unmatched. The royal relics add a feature to the park’s cab. Undoubtedly, it is one of the most loved and fascinating tourist destinations in Madhya Pradesh.
