Keibul Lamjao National Park – A Floating Wonder

Keibul Lamjao National Park – Located in the state of Manipur , Keibul Lamjao national park is all about chirping of birds , rare animals and thick grass.

Hovering on the middle of Loktak Lake, Keibul Lamjao is the only ‘floating sanctuary’ of the World. This national park covers a total area of 40 sq.km .

The rich vegetation and the breathtaking scenic beauty add more to the attraction of this national park.

What does the history say?

Keibul Lamjao is also the home to brow-antlered deer or sangai or the dancing deer , which is considered as the state animal as well.

Every year , Manipur holds an annual festival , which comprises of music and dance , which has been named after the state animal.

Back in 1953 , Loktak Lake was declared as a safe place to protect sangai deer . Later in 1977 , Keibul Lamjao was established.

Hunting was absolutely prohibited from this place. However , the gradual decrease in the headcount of the state animal has become a subject of concern for many.

In 2014, almost 204, sangai’s were counted. According to other sources , in 2015, the headcount fell.

Face Some Rare Animals

Comprising of huge wetland and aquatic bodies , Keibul Lamjao National Park has proved to be the homeland for many aquatic animals. Every now and then you will spot tortoise , snake and Asian golden cat.

Hog deer , mantjac and sambar are not a very rare sight in Keibul Lamjo National Park . Hog beer is again one of the rare animals , which has vanished from the entire Manipur valley and could only be seen at this national park. While exploring the park , you can catch a glimpse of mantjac.

Keep your binocular real close to you , as you will find some common as well as rare birds flying by . Shaheen Falcon , The Black Eagle , Bamboo Partridge , Green Peafowl and the Eastern Shite Stork are few common birds found in Keibul Lamjao .

The Vegetation At The National Park  

The flora or the vegetation requires a special mention . Majority of Keibul Lamjao comprises of floating marshes.

Long ago , Tou, Singut and Khoimom used to dominate the plantation section of Keibul Lamjao.

With passing time , the vegetation of the park changed , now Zizania latifolia and Leersia hexandra balances the greeneries of this place.

Hot or cold – Know The Weather

Keibul Lamjo National Park receives an annual rainfall of about 1220 mm . During the winters , carry heavy woollen clothes , as the temperature goes as low as 1.7 degree centigrade.

During the summers , you can expect a hot and humid weather.

If you want to see the migratory birds , target the month of November or March . These two months are climatically comfortable as well .

How To Reach Keibul Lamjo National Park

By Air : Imphal, the capital of Manipur is located just 48 km away from the Keibul Lamjo National Park. Imphal Airport is well connected with cities like Kolkata , Hyderabad, Delhi and Mumbai.

From Imphal you will get ample of buses or cars which will take you to the National park. If you are reaching by rail then Dimapur is the nearest railway station , just 215 km away from Imphal.

If you want to reach Keibul Lamjo National Park by car, then you need to arrive at Imphal either via Guwahati or Silchar , both are well connected with the Capital. From Imphal reaching Keibul Lamjo National Park is very easy as it is just 48 km away from the Capital .

Where To Stay – Know Well Before Going

Since Imphal is the nearest place to Keibul Lamjo National Park, you need to halt at the Capital of Manipur to visit the National Park. You will find many hotels and resort at pocket friendly prices.

The Timing

It is mandatory for the foreigner to acquire a special RAP or Restricted Area Permit to enter Manipur , this permit is valid at the Keibul Lamjao Park as well. Indians need to acquire Inner Line Permit while touring Manipur , this is valid at the National Park.

To complete the tour of the entire park , one needs to have enough time . Be sure to have at least two to three spare hours while visiting this park .
