Indira Gandhi – A Legendary Icon for Next Generation

Indira Gandhi full name is Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi belongs to Nehru family, she was born as Indira Nehru on 19th November 1917 in Allahabad in a Kashmiri Pandit family.

Jawharlal Nehru is the father of Indira Gandhi and he was main member in Indian politics, and also fought for Independence from British rule. He was the first Prime Minister of India. Indhira’s mother was Kamala Nehru, who is from large family estate in Allahabad at Anand Bhavan.

She was the only child to their parents, she had lonely and sad childhood because her father was generally busy in directing the Indian politics and her mother was regularly used to be bed due to her illness she suffered with tuberculosis and later she passed away. And she had less communication with her father due to his busy schedule and thus they used to communicate through letters most of the time.

Her education was done at home mostly taught by tutors and she was irregular to  attend the school till matriculation, which was done in 1934. She studied in Modern School in Delhi later she also studied in Allahabad St Cecilia’s and St Mary’s Christian convent schools. Kamala Nehru her mother moved her to Belur Math headquarters of Ramakrishna Mission where Swami Ranganathananda was her guardian. Later she went to Viswa Bharati University in Shantiniketan to study and it was the time for her interview, where Rabindranath Tagore titled her as  Priyadarshini, familiarly known as Indira Priyadarshini.

After her mother died she used to go the Badminton School before she applied for Somerville College to study History. While she was in Great Britain, she used to meet her future husband  Feroze Gandhi.

According to Adi Dharma tradition they got married in Allahabad, in 1950 she was Indira and after she got married she became Indira Gandhi. She helped her father as a personal assistant during his service as the first Prime Minister of India. Around at the end of 1950’s she became President of the Congress and served the party. In 1964 her father Jawaharlal Nehru was died and she was chosen as a member of Rajya Sabha. Later she was given Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

As the first term of the prime minister, she was criticized by the media and the opposition parties as dumb doll in Hindi “Goongi goodiya” of who had got elected her. In 1967 general elections for Lok sabha and state assemblies it is the first electoral test for Indira, in Lok Sabha Congress majority  was reduced and lost their power in many states across the country.

The biggest achievement of Indira after the 1971 election came in December 1971 with India’s deciding victory over Pakistan in the liberation war that accompany to the formation of independent Bangladesh. The dislikes to Gandhi in 1973–75 period after the Indira motion had gone back was strongest in the states of Bihar and GujaratJayaprakash Narayan, of Bihar who was the veteran leader came out of retirement to lead the protest movement there.

Indira Gandhi was the first female prime minister of India, she also conduct a movement called as “Green revolution” to drive about agricultural improvement to help for the sick and poor farmers.

She died on October 31st 1984, and then along India and many other countries has provided stamps representing Indira Gandhi as a memorial of her stamps, and these are in various forms many other countries are included these stamps in their countries East Germany, Russia and Burundi.

When Indira Gandhi went to see Orissa where she gave her last speech the day before her death, the speech was held at the then Parade ground before the Secretariat of Orissa, on October 30 1984.

In the garden of the Prime Minister’s residence placed 1 Safdarjung Road, New Delhi, the hit happened as she was walking over an arch gate guarded by Satwant and Beant they were two of Gandhi’s bodyguards shot her with their service guns, while she has been interviewed by the British actor Peter Ustinov, who was taking on record for Irish television. She was shot 31 bullets and Beant Singh shot her 3 times using his side arm after Satwant Singh fired 30 rounds. Beant Singh and Satwant Singh left their guns and surrendered. Later arrested for scheme in the attack. Satwant and Kehar were punished to death and hanged in Tihar Jail.

The place where Indira Gandhi Samadhi was built is known as “Shakthi Sthal”, where every year higher officials of India pay tribute to Indira Gandhi.
