Essay On Computer

essay on computer

Essay On Computer. It can be best explained as a multi purpose electronic device that can receive, process and store data. This device is used in every part of the society now in conjunction with the Internet.

Computers in the recent days are no comparison with the erstwhile computers which are confined to a specific use. Now based on the need, you may ask for a different configuration of the computer and it will be obtained with minimum effort.

A computer is basically a combination of few major components – the hardware, the software and the required equipment. Nowadays, computers are a bit more complex and depending on the need, there can be more and more hardware required to serve a definite need.

Invention Of Computer

Though the invention of Computer was tagged to ‘Charles Babbage’ (also considered ‘Father of Computers’), the groundwork for the computer can be linked to the invention of ABACUS (in China) and slide rule by William Ought red.

Having said that, the computer that was invented by Charles Babbage (with the difference and analytical engines) was very mechanical and its weight was in the counts of tons. The invention of the computer had to go through various phases for what we see right now.

The evolution of Computers has been categorised into 4 phases by the internal components used for building the Computer itself – Vacuum tubes for the first generation, Transistors for the second generation, Integrated Circuits for the third generation and artificial intelligence is the way forward in the current times.

The computer has become a key participant in the growth, considering whatever field we talk about – let it be education, jobs, and industries. The computation power of the computer has been used very much to get the best possible utilisation of the resources available.

Components of Computer

The major set of components that constitute the hardware of it are as follows

essay on computer

Central Processing Unit (CPU) is considered as the brain of the computer, where all the computations are catered by the computer. CPU carries out all the data processing operations, stores data, instructions and intermediate results (as applicable). CPU controls the operations of all parts of the computer. There are 3 more components to the CPU itself which helps in the computational tasks.

  • ALU (Arithmetic Logic Unit)
  • Memory Unit
  • Control Unit

Primary Memory

This section of the memory holds only those instructions that the computer is working on. This is a limited size of the memory which is volatile in nature, meaning, the memory is wiped off as and when the necessary computational tasks are completed or when there is no power supply available. This memory is made up of semiconductor devices and can be broadly divided into two categories.

  • ROM (Read Only Memory)
  • RAM (Random Access Memory)

Secondary Memory

This section of the memory is also called as the Non-volatile memory or the extensible/external memory. This is slower than the main memory and is used to store information permanently.

Input Devices

These are the devices that link the computer and its user to communicate with the computer. These input devices pass on the details entered by the user to the computer in its own understandable language. Examples are a keyboard, mouse, joystick, light pen, track ball, scanner, graphic tablet, microphone, Magnetic Ink Card Reader (MICR), Optical Character Reader (OCR), Bar code reader, Optical Mark Reader (OMR) and etc.

Output Devices

The devices through which the computer tries to communicate with us are called the Output devices. The results of the computation that we have requested will be displayed or the like. Examples are Monitor, Printer, Graphic plotters etc

Types Of Computer

Based on the needs and requirements that ought to be fulfilled by the use of computers, there is a range of computers available to cater them. Broad classification and their usage are explained as below

  • Personal / Micro computer
  • Desktop computer
  • Mainframe
  • Super computer
  • Workstation

Though the following are not computers altogether but then serve the purpose of one, these can be an extension to the classification of computers made above.

  • Laptops / Notebooks
  • Netbook
  • Personal Digital Assistants (PDA)
  • Server
  • Wearable computer

Applications Of Computer

As we have discussed all through this article the use of computers, now is the time to understand it thoroughly. Computers can be used to read news online, to play games, to compute complex calculations, programmed to do things just like a robot does and many other things. Computers along with other advanced technologies have automated most of our daily routine tasks which can involve a lot of manual intervention. Considering education itself, books can now safely be replaced with online content available over the internet accessed through a computer. Examinations can be given online, instead of being present physically at an examination center.

Why Computer in our daily life?

Computers in conjunction with the internet have simplified a lot of mundane tasks into easier things as you can book a train ticket from the comfort of your own home rather than standing in a line at the reservation office. You can get to know the latest of the news without relying on the newspapers. You can get to refer tons of online material than just a physical book available with you at your home on any subject. Bank transactions can be made online avoiding the use of physical bills. Utility bills can also be paid from the home online again.

Pros and Cons of Computer

  • Most of the computation work can be done by the Computers.
  • Ease of use has made its presence very common in every household.
  • Organised use and maintenance of all our arti-facts.

  • Children can get distracted if they tend to play games on the computer instead of studying
  • If children start preferring to play games on the computer, they will become couch potatoes
  • Physical exercise of going out and getting things done will be missed

There are as many advantages as there are disadvantages in the use of computers, nonetheless, it is a good source of information. The right usage of it can do wonders, save a lot of time in the manual way of doing things, can be a good way to store information and maintain it. Can be a good source for learning and teaching in the education associations.
