Earlier in the day, senior Gujarat Congress leader and close aide of party president Sonia Gandhi, Ahmed Patel, filed his nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha elections.
New Delhi, July 26: Bharatiya Janata Party president Amit Shah would be contesting the Rajya Sabha polls from Gujarat, along with senior party leader and Union Minister for Textile, Smriti Zubin Irani. The elections would be held on August 8.
“We have decided to nominate Amit Shah ji and Smriti Irani ji for the Rajya Sabha poll from Gujarat,” BJP’s Central Election Committee chief J P Nadda said, following the party’s parliamentary committee’s meet in the national capital. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also attended the meeting.
Earlier in the day, senior Gujarat Congress leader and close aide of party president Sonia Gandhi, Ahmed Patel, filed his nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha election. According to reports, Patel needs the support of at least 47 of the 57 Congress MLAs to get re-elected to the Parliament’s Upper House.
“I have made it clear to the party. If I will contest Rajya Sabha polls, it would only from the state of Gujarat,” Patel said. His candidature is presumably under risk, due to the growing rift within Gujarat Congress. In the recently conducted presidential poll, 11 legislators of Congress reportedly voted in favour of NDA nominee Ram Nath Kovind.
The role of former Chief Minister Shankar Singh Vaghela, who was the Leader of Opposition till last week before quitting the party, is considered to be crucial. According to reports, Vaghela holds clout over 10 Congress MLAs, who may vote against Patel on his behest.
